The IIE’s Varsity College Cape Town students Daniel Jacobs, from Hout Bay, and captain Tayne Thompson from Claremont, paddling to a second place finish in the men’s double division, contributing to the Brand’s Canoeing team taking gold at the recent University Sports South Africa (USSA) Canoeing championships hosted by the Fish River Canoe Marathon in Cradock, Eastern Cape. Carole Adam, IIE’s Varsity College’s national sports manager, described this year’s USSA Canoeing Champs as one for the history books as they recorded their first ever overall gold medal. “I feel our seven-member team’s success can be attributed to us combining elite and social student-athletes in our team. There was a great balance of top-class performances and good ‘gees’ on the river. I’m extremely proud of their achievements.”
