Drum majorette squads representing schools from across the city took part in the Western Province Majorettes and Cheerleading Association’s (WPMCA) group competition, held at Groote Schuur Primary School (GSPS), at the weekend.

Hosts Groote Schuur Primary and The Jetz (a team comprising of members from various schools including neighbouring Groote Schuur High) were among the five primary schools and five high schools who competed for honours.

Groote Schuur Primary was crowned the winner of the juniors division, while Hottentots Holland High School and The Jetz were the winners of the seniors’ divisions.

Saturday’s gathering was the third competition for the year and the first large drill competition in 2023.

GSPS performed well, winning first, second and third places in some of the categories.

The WPMCA will host one more competition for the groups as well as a large drill before its big groups and drill championships in June. The association’s small groups championships will be held on Saturday May 20, at Helderkruin Primary School, in Kleinvlei.

The national championships will take place at Durban’s Queensmead hockey stadium in July.
