Rondebosch Boys’ collected maximum points when they visited Bishops Diocesan College for a schools rugby thriller in Rondebosch on Saturday, June 1.
With proceedings kicking-off at 8.30am, from under-14 teams right up to 12.30pm with the under-19A teams, the Piley Rees field, nestled under Table Mountain, was packed with spectators.
The 31-16 win against Bishops was Bosch Rugby’s fourth win in eight games. The win moves them to seventh position on the schools rugby rankings.
Unbeaten and leading the pack are Paul Roos and Grey College, followed by Paarl Gim, Affies, Paarl Boys’ and Oakdale, respectively.
Bosch’s coach, Joel Carew said the win was vital for the boys’ confidence going into the winter schools’ rugby events.
“Obviously it has been an up and down season for us but we are happy with the results,” he said.
“Small moments won us the match today. Bishops stopped us a few times, especially in that first half. After half time, the guys were properly focused and they came out firing. We scored two to three tries in the 10-minute period just after half time. We tipped it over and perhaps that may have won us the game,” said Carew.
Causing Bishops’ havoc from the flanks, the man-of-the-match, Joshua Neill, standing next to his teammate, Alutha Wesi, said a couple of years ago, they sat on the corner flag dreaming of the day they would run onto the Piley Rees field.
“It was a beautiful day, clear skies. It was an incredible experience. Bishops was strong. They played hard. They really made us work for our win today. But the boys stuck to what we knew. We stuck to the forwards game, we mauled them,” he said.
Rondesboch play their next fixture against Hottentots Holland, at home, on July 13.
Bishops will look to bounce back to winning ways when they host St Andrew’s on July 6.
Up town, SACS edged a one-point win against Wynberg Boys’ at the Hawthornden sports field, in Wynberg.
SACS were 30-29 winners, moving them to 20th position on the top 50 schools rugby rankings, while Wynberg Boys’ remained in 14th so far spot this year.
After the break, SACS will host Bellville, while Wynberg welcome Brackenfell High, on July 13.
