Victoria Hub Girls are the new T20 Girls under-19 champions.
Vics Hub beat Gugulethu Hub Girls in the Western Province Cricket Association’s under-19 girls finale, played at the Vineyard Cricket Oval, in Claremont, on Friday, November 8.
The tournament was played in a knockout format, with both teams unbeaten against 14 other teams.
Vics Hub head coach, Gary Fourie showed sportsmanship to Gugulethu and expressed how happy he was for his team.
“Today Gugs showed us we are not invincible. I think we need lessons like that to humble us. Well done to Gugs for pushing us. This win means a lot for us at Vics. These girls work hard. They want to play cricket. They love the game. This tournament was a nice vehicle for exposure for them. We need more of this,” said Fourie.
Gugulethu Hubs assistant coach, Sikhululo Rala said the tournament helped the young girls team to realise their potential.
“The girls worked really hard to be in the final. They wanted to win. There is a lot of positives we can take from this tournament. We have a strong bowling attack. We were unlucky today. We know Vics has quality players. We also have quality players. We are happy for the girls team for putting us here as a club. We can see it, girls cricket is growing in Gugs,” said Rala.
Chairperson of the Western Province Youth Cricket Association (WPYCA), Rodney Theys expressing how impressed he was with the fight the two girls’ teams showcased throughout the tournament.
“We are always trying to promote girls’ cricket and promote the game. Our main focus, either than getting the district running, is to get the girls’ cricket up and running. We are trying to get coordinates in every school district to get the schools going,” he said.
“We are thankful there is a CSA Schools T20 competition. Prior to this there was only the under-18/19 boys Coke T20. The fact that there is a girls’ under-19 tournament is music to my ears. The fact that Cricket South Africa recognises that we need to promote and get the girls’ cricket going is a wonderful initiative and it is great that the hubs could do it,” said Theys.
