Dumping of refuse reflects a lack of respect for the environment

"OUR parks have become like jungles”, the POST, January 22-26 refers.

It paints a disheartening picture of our once beautiful parks and gardens, now overrun with refuse. The Chatsworth garden site stands out as a particularly the worst example, with scavengers exploiting the situation for their own gain. It appears that the Department of Solid Waste (DSW) is struggling to address this issue.

The indiscriminate dumping of refuse on our roadsides has become a rampant problem, reflecting a disturbing lack of respect for our environment, communities, and ourselves. As we strive to build a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable community, it is disheartening to witness the blatant disregard for proper waste disposal practices by some residents.

The community must take responsibility for its actions. It is time for us to reflect on our behaviour and reclaim our values and respect. Hang your heads in shame to all those residents who always dump outside the designated area. You are the greatest threat in our community and you have no pride.

I urge Teddy Govender and his team to engage in constructive dialogue with stakeholders to advocate for the installation of cameras, enabling the implementation of heavy fines for offenders. Taking responsibility for our actions and advocating for positive change is crucial in creating a better future for generations to come.

I commend the POST for highlighting this critical environmental issue, raising awareness, and promoting accountability. Well done.
