GQ caught up with Siyabulela to talk about his entrepreneurial journey and academic pursuits.

GQ: Your work merges academia with real-world impact. How has your PhD research in project management influenced the way you approach entrepreneurship and business strategy?

Siyabulela Sophi: My current doctoral research in business management sciences majoring in project management has shaped how I build businesses and support entrepreneurs, especially in township communities. One of the key lessons I have applied is stakeholder management, which is the essence of understanding and balancing the needs of different people involved in a business or project. Many small businesses fail because they do not have proper systems in place, I use project management methodologies and industry experience to find remedies for these businesses.

When I started Sophi Strategies Inc., I discovered that many local businesses were dealing with compliance, financial planning, and growth strategies challenges. Through the use of  project management concepts, I created sequential procedures to help entrepreneurs register their businesses, stay compliant, and attract investors. This structured methodology has helped over 300 small enterprises in South African townships improve their efficiency and long-term economic viability.

Udaba Arts and Culture Pop-Up Festival, which I co-founded, is an example of an immense endeavor that requires clear goal formulation, financial management, and collaboration with artists, vendors, and sponsors. My doctoral research assisted me in developing an event model that ensures seamless operations while providing actual economic opportunity for local creatives. By combining academic knowledge and real-world experience, I have been able to create businesses and projects with long-term influence. 

Our mentorship and pitch-preparation workshops help entrepreneurs confidently engage with potential funders and larger institutions. GQ: Sophi Strategies Inc. is focused on helping young entrepreneurs build sustainable businesses. What are the biggest challenges they face in breaking into formal markets, and how do you address them?

Siyabulela Sophi: Young entrepreneurs in Khayelitsha and analogous townships confront numerous barriers to entering formal markets, including infrastructural and systemic constraints.  Unreliable electricity, inadequate internet access, and poor transit networks are only a few examples of the detrimental effects on corporate productivity, digital visibility, and logistics.   For example, a local fashion business may fail to fulfil e-commerce orders owing to load shedding or courier unreliability, resulting in a loss of customer and supplier trust.

Due to a tough and costly regulatory environment, many youth-run businesses do not have access to traditional trade settings and typically operate informally. Without appropriate registration, tax clearance, and BEE certification, these businesses are barred from lucrative prospects such as government bids or supplying legitimate shops like as Spar or Boxer.  These structural impediments are not the result of a lack of ambition, but rather a lack of accessible support systems.

Sophi Strategies Inc. addresses these issues from a holistic township-based perspective. We provide young entrepreneurs with cost-effective, step-by-step formalization services such as CIPC registration, SARS compliance, and UIF disclosures, removing entrance barriers to formal trade. We also provide business development training and connect entrepreneurs to practical market opportunities through platforms such as the Udaba Arts & Culture Pop-Up Festival, the First Friday Conversations, and the Khayelitsha Centre for Entrepreneurship Research and Innovation, which also serves as an access-to-market initiative. To address infrastructural deficiencies, we engage with local hubs like Nazeema Isaacs Library to provide shared workspaces with Wi-Fi and power, allowing businesses to operate professionally.

GQ: The Khayelitsha Centre for Entrepreneurship, Research, and Innovation is a major initiative. What inspired you to create it.

Siyabulela Sophi: The Khayelitsha Centre for Entrepreneurship, Research, and Innovation was founded on a profound understanding of the critical need to create a locally based ecosystem that enables young people and township entrepreneurs to succeed despite the institutional constraints they encounter.  As someone who grew up in Khayelitsha and has worked extensively with aspiring entrepreneurs through Sophi Strategies Inc., I've seen firsthand how many young people have talent, drive, and innovative ideas have, but lack the resources, mentorship, and market access to scale or even formalize their businesses. 

The Centre was designed to bridge that gap by bringing together innovation, education, and business growth in a way that reflects the realities of township living. We were intrigued by the community's potential and the need to transition from "survival entrepreneurship" to scalable, sustainable business models backed by research, digital tools, and structured assistance.

The Centre is a symbol of possibility, providing local youth with access to quality entrepreneurship education and innovative platforms without having to leave their own community. It encourages collaboration and professional growth among township creatives, small-scale manufacturers, digital entrepreneurs, and even early-stage researchers. More young people are confidently selling their ideas, cooperating across sectors, and pursuing undiscovered industries such as township tourism, technology, and green energy.

By focusing on township realities while providing world-class support, the Khayelitsha Centre for Entrepreneurship, Research, and Innovation is rethinking what is possible in the township economy. The Khayelitsha Centre for Entrepreneurship, Research, and Innovation (KCERI)'s research component is critical in developing evidence-based solutions adapted to the unique difficulties of township economies. KCERI collects data for internal programs as well as external policy recommendations through ongoing studies on youth unemployment, informal entrepreneurship, and hurdles to formalization.

GQ: You emphasize the role of creative branding and cultural storytelling in economic development. Can you share an example of how this has transformed a local business or brand?

Siyabulela Sophi: MK Originals Clothing, a township-born streetwear brand based in Khayelitsha, is an excellent example of how innovative branding and cultural storytelling have transformed a local business.  Initially selling printed T-shirts from a tiny container, the MK Originals Team collaborated with Sophi Strategies Inc. to create a brand narrative based on township enthusiasm, resilience, and identity.  We assisted MK Originals in repositioning its messaging to reflect "Crafted in Kasi, Worn with Pride," which included local vernacular, famous township graphics, and storytelling content that resonated strongly with young customers. 

The brand gained appeal outside of the township with visual advertising shot on Khayelitsha's bustling streets and pop-up activations at events such as the Udaba Arts & Culture Pop-Up Festival. This cultural storytelling not only helped MK Originals acquire corporate clients, but it also resulted in more online orders and collaborations with local celebrities. MK Originals transformed from a hustle to a well-known lifestyle brand by putting its Khayelitsha roots into a compelling story. The company has expanded into a full-time manufacturer of merchandise for schools, clubs, and organizations, specializing in both manufacturing and printing of apparels. 

GQ: Kwa Ace is more than just an entertainment space; it's a cultural movement. How do you balance its lifestyle appeal with deeper economic and social impact?

Siyabulela Sophi: Kwa Ace is more than just a premier entertainment hub—it’s a powerful township-born brand that has become a symbol of excellence, culture, and aspiration in Khayelitsha. As the Brand Manager, I am responsible for ensuring that Kwa Ace continues to create meaningful economic development opportunities for the local community and surrounding areas.

One of our key pillars is job creation, with the venue directly employing residents in roles such as bartenders, chefs, cleaners, security, and technical staff. We also prioritize working with local suppliers for branding, renovations, sound equipment, and other operational needs, ensuring that the value chain remains within the community. This approach not only strengthens the township economy but also builds long-term relationships that empower small service providers to grow alongside us.

Another vital part of our impact strategy is the consistent platform we provide for local DJs and entertainers. We prioritize working with local talent, helping them develop their portfolios, and earn income in a professional setting. Kwa Ace has become a respected launchpad for emerging artists who now perform across South Africa. By positioning the brand as both aspirational and rooted in community development, we have created a model where entertainment and economic empowerment go hand in hand. Kwa Ace continues to influence township culture and entrepreneurship, proving that world-class brands can be built and sustained from within the heart of Khayelitsha.

GQ: Many township-based businesses struggle with scalability. What are some strategies you've found effective in helping these businesses grow beyond their immediate communities?

Siyabulela Sophi: Scalability is a significant difficulty for township-based enterprises, which sometimes have limited access to formal markets, infrastructure constraints, and a lack of exposure to larger client bases. One useful method we've utilized is formalization and market preparation, which ensures that enterprises are compliant, registered, and capable of meeting procurement norms.  At Sophi Strategies Inc. we assist entrepreneurs in developing processes such as accurate record-keeping, pricing models, and customer service methods that enable them to successfully scale.

Many township businesses expand through increased visibility, partnerships, and networks that reach beyond their neighborhood.  We've made this possible by linking entrepreneurs to business expos, urban pop-ups, and focused activations that allow them to offer their products or services in new markets while also developing relationships with customers and suppliers that are not in their immediate vicinity.

Digital marketing and e-commerce are also becoming increasingly important—by training township entrepreneurs to use social media strategically and develop online stores, we enable them to reach customers in other provinces and cities. These tactics, along with mentorship and storytelling to establish brand identity, demonstrate that, with the right assistance, township-born businesses can grow into sustainable, scalable enterprises with national influence.

GQ: You’ve positioned yourself at the intersection of business, culture, and innovation. What do you think is the key to making entrepreneurship more inclusive in South Africa?

Siyabulela Sophi: The key to making entrepreneurship more inclusive in South Africa is to create readily available friendly ecosystems that foster varied talent and ideas from all backgrounds.  This includes overcoming systemic constraints including a lack of finance, mentorship, and market access, as well as encouraging cultural relevance in business practices.

Entrepreneurs must feel empowered by tools that relate to their personal experiences and unique circumstances. By integrating local knowledge with global best practices and fostering cross-sector collaboration, we can ensure that every aspiring business owner, regardless of socioeconomic background, has the resources, opportunity, and platforms to succeed.

GQ: South Africa’s creative economy is often undervalued in traditional business spaces. How do you see art, fashion, and music playing a bigger role in economic empowerment?

Siyabulela Sophi: South Africa's creative economy is a major engine of local growth in areas such as Khayelitsha.  Kwa Ace, for example, employs DJs, vocalists, dancers, sound technicians, photographers, videographers, promoters, and food sellers through regular events. 

These activities encourage local business activity and keep money moving around the community.  Sophi Strategies Inc. supports this by assisting creatives such as MCs, event hosts, content creators, and entertainment service providers in becoming compliant, market-ready, and eligible for funding or partnerships.  Venues like Kwa Ace, as well as support organizations like Sophi Strategies, demonstrate how the creative economy can generate jobs, grow small businesses, and push economic empowerment in townships.

GQ: Through your research and business efforts, what structural changes do you believe need to happen to make township economies more self-sustaining?

Siyabulela Sophi: Through my studies and entrepreneurial initiatives, I identified the importance of structural reforms in townships to promote long-term entrepreneurship and localized economic development. In my Master's thesis, "Modeling a Project-Based Entrepreneur Training and Development Programme for Unemployed Khayelitsha Youth," I underlined the need of providing specialized training, mentorship, and market access to township entrepreneurs. The study revealed that many young individuals possess entrepreneurial potential but lack established support systems.

This research led directly to the establishment of the Khayelitsha Centre for Entrepreneurship and Research Innovation (KCERI), a platform designed to bridge these gaps by providing business development support, training, and research-driven solutions to boost youth entrepreneurship and economic activity in the area.My most recent co-authored publication in the International Journal of Advanced Business Studies (IJABS), "Determinants of Scope Creep in Selected Construction Projects in the Cape Metropolis," illustrated how poorly managed community projects can harm local economies by delaying service delivery and undermining trust in development processes.

These findings underline the importance of improved project governance, accountability, and community involvement in township development. These initiatives show that in order to make township economies more self-sustaining, we must provide localized training, build project execution methods, and foster supportive ecosystems that allow small businesses to thrive and expand within the community.

GQ: Looking ahead, what’s next for you? Are there any upcoming projects or initiatives that you’re particularly excited about?

Siyabulela Sophi: Looking ahead, completing my doctoral work is a major priority because it will lay the groundwork for my continued contributions to knowledge, policy, and entrepreneurial development in township economies. This achievement will not only strengthen my academic credentials, but will also broaden the reach of my practical work in areas such as Khayelitsha.

I am also committed to actively promoting the Kwa Ace brand, which has proven to be more than just an entertainment venue, it is a major economic generator in the community. I'm delighted to continue developing platforms for local creatives and enterprises to grow with the forthcoming events and festivities we've planned under Kwa Ace. 

These events will create jobs, benefit local businesses, and enrich the township's cultural and economic ecosystem. KCERI (Khayelitsha Centre for Entrepreneurship and Research Innovation) will receive the dedicated attention required to achieve its long-term goals. The goal is to grow its operations, increase training programs, and strengthen partnerships with public and private sector stakeholders. I'm particularly enthusiastic about establishing KCERI as a paradigm for research-led, community-based entrepreneurship growth in SA. These projects demonstrate my ongoing commitment to empowering township communities through education, creativity, and entrepreneurship.
